Bourgeois Boheme: The ethical step forward

Other | Tuesday 3rd July 2018 | Roberta Micallef

Alicia Lai founded her London-based vegan footwear brand, Bourgeois Boheme in 2005. Before starting her business, Lai was a podiatrist and a proud vegan, the perfect ingredients for a vegan footwear entrepreneur at the time.

The footwear brand is reinventing traditional footwear, by putting a modern twist on classic styles, like the brogue. Most shoes on their website are simple and sleek with asymmetrical design that would jazz up any outfit.

The brand promises an animal-free shoe made with the most sustainable products possible. Many animal free products use PVC as an alternative to leather, while this has the desired look of leather, it isn’t great for the environment. The company is constantly working to improve their materials and accept their sustainable responsibility as a contributor to consumerism.

Bourgeois Boheme is a relatively small business, their production takes place in three handpicked factories in São João da Madeira, Portugal, with the use of traditional techniques. The company regularly visit the factories, in order to integrate with their workers and to make sure that they are working in a safe and healthy environment.

If your leather shoes are failing you and wish to contribute to the sustainable and ethical revolution that is happening…consider Bourgeois Boheme, I guarantee you’ll walk out with a cleaner conscious.
