Live sets in drum & bass are all the rage right now, and High Contrast is joining in.
Mainstay artists from Sigma to Wilkinson, Sub Focus to Noisia are all taking things to new levels and switching the decks for a pile of equipment & instruments for sick live sets. Joining the ranks of drum & bass live acts this weekend was High Contrast. He smashed a packed Electric Brixton in his debut headline live performance. The Welsh d&b don and new band members brought previous High Contrast tunes to life and showcased some of the latest material in a spectacular way.
Warming up the party was Radio 1xtra's DJ Target, hyping a diverse crowd where old school heads and fresh faced ravers partied side by side. He got some early cheers in, with tracks like Hazard's 'Bricks Don't Roll' & Wilkinson's 'Take You Higher'. Though there was no denying that; despite Target's top mix of bassline, grime and drum & bass, there was one thing on everyone's mind, and that was the sweet liquid sounds of one of the scene's most cherished names, High Contrast.
He took to the stage as the floor roared while the strings for his '04 classic, 'Racing Green' crept in through the speakers. One track in, and it was clear that this set was gonna be something special. A newly formed High Contrast band, with the main man at it's heart, smashed the show with a perfect mix of old and new tunes from one of drum & bass' most iconic acts. Soulful singers added new elements of class to already crisp productions, and live drums and guitar combined with High Contrast's signature smooth vibes adding rugged elements of rock.
As his set went on, the packed venue fell more and more in love with drum & bass' newest live act. The crowd went crazy as they fired out vintage tunes; 'If We Ever' and 'The Basement Track' and were captivated as they unleashed new material from the forthcoming album. Before we knew it, Electric Brixton were going mad to High Contrast's recent hit, 'Remind Me' closing off what was an incredible live show.
High Contrast's live show came shortly after he dropped the Questions EP on 3beat. The five tracked release includes his long-awaited remix of Underworld's classic, 'Rez'. Get a copy here.
