Hilarious Trailer For Documentary Series Bill Nye Saves The World

Other | Friday 10th February 2017 | David

With an anti-science President and an anti-science party now leading the most powerful country in the world, the need to educate the general public about science has truly never been more important.

So thanks to Netflix for creating the new documentary series Bill Nye Saves the World, which premiers on April 21, 2017. It features the celebrity scientist Bill Nye and several guest stars, as they prove that science really can be fun, as they carry out some crazy (and potentially dangerous) experiments. Needless to say, things will go boom.

Why is it so important for the American public to be educated about science in this day and age, you ask? Here are a few points:

Donald Trump has called climate change a hoax created by the Chinese and has dealings with major oil companies who continue to pollute the Earth. The Republican Party has always been avid climate change deniers, something that Republic controlled media outlets like Fox News push constantly.

Betsy DeVos was confirmed as the United States Secretary of Education. She's a religious fundamentalist who strongly opposes teaching evolution in schools (she's also against the public school system in general). Instead DeVos favours the teaching of creationism as proven fact. It is alleged that she bought her position by paying over $70,000 to various Republican senators, as detailed in the chart below:

Trump's Vice President Mike Pence is also a religious fanatic who desperately wants to abolish the 'separation of church and state,' part of the American Constitution. He already passed the discriminatory Religious Freedom Restoration Act during his term as Governor of Indiana, and he also (I am not making this up) argued that cigarettes don't cause cancer.

Many of the people in Trump's cabinet are also strictly anti-abortion and are likely to pressure him into passing an anti-abortion bill in the near future. So yeah, Trump and the Republicans are anti-science. That much is pretty obvious.

So you'll probably be pleased to know that in addition to featuring a ton of cool and zany science experiements, Nye's new show will also place an emphasis on debunking misconceptions and anti-scientific viewpoints. Hopefully it will sway a few Republican supporters. Maybe Bill Nye really will save the world.
