Other | Tuesday 19th April 2016 | Arash

“Raving Iran” is an upcoming documentary which takes a look into the underground techno scene on the streets of Tehran, following DJs Anoosh and Arash, the documentary looks at the many struggles and dangers faced during their attempts at performing.

Having been directed by Swiss filmmaker Susanne Regina Meures, the documentary shows how the DJ’s tire of, “hiding from the police and their stagnating career, organise one last manic techno rave under dangerous circumstances in the desert.”

The synopsis reads, “Back in Tehran they try their luck selling their illegally printed music album without permission,” “When Anoosh is arrested, there seems to be no hope left. But then they receive a phone call from the biggest techno festival in the world. Once landed in Switzerland, the haze of the instant euphoria evaporates quickly when the seriousness of the situation starts to dawn on them.”

Western music has been banned from state-run radio and TV in Iran and six Iranian youths were arrested and sentenced to jail and 91 lashes for appearing in a viral video dancing to Pharrell’s “Happy.”

Although the documentary has no cinema release dates yet, it has already toured internationally at a number of film festivals and is still being shown.
