Young Thug releases surprise EP 'Hear No Evil'

RnB/Hip Hop | Monday 16th April 2018 | Jake

Young Thug had previously said he wouldn’t be releasing any new music this year, a promise few expected him to keep. And so it proved, with a surprise EP dropping with some major collabs.

The Atlanta enigma released three songs comprising the EP Hear No Evil, their differing styles showcasing the talents of a rapper reaching his artistic peak. Thug has been relatively quiet since his joint tape with Future was released late last year, hardly doing any features and only releasing the tribute song ‘MLK’ this year.

The hibernation is now officially over, with the prospect of a further two EPs to be released in the near future. Each song on Hear No Evil boasts an A-list feature, with Nicki Minaj the standout collab on the track ‘Anybody’. Long-time collaborator Lil Uzi Vert lends his voice to the Southside produced ‘Up’, whilst 21 Savage features on ‘Now’.

‘Up’ harks back to early, erratic Thug, with a high pitched whine riding over a snappy beat, the beat works better for Uzi, who takes a relaxed approach to his verse that flows over the production smoothly, in stark contrast to the purposefully grating Thug tone.

‘Now’ exhibits the Thug we’ve become familiar with, a more traditional rap verse that manages to maintain individuality, as per usual 21 intones an effortlessly cool verse that oozes that sound of total indifference.

‘Anybody’ is the standout track and has gathered the most views on YouTube so far. It’s a sinister track, with the chorus rapped over a drum-heavy beat and underlying moans. There is also a sign video to the song, possibly commissioned for Thug’s deaf brother.
