Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ releases his latest mixtape ‘Summer Knights’ which acts as a introduction to his first studio album B4.DA.$$ set to be released in early 2014.
The 17 track mixtape originally began as an EP but later became an extended project. As a follow up from his prior mixtape 1999 which was released almost exactly a year ago in June 2012, the 18 year old rapper shows his growth as a lyricist, as his word-play has gone from mild to straight up fire on this one. Nonetheless, the mixtapes still display original New York style rap, as the nostalgic feel of the mixtape brings us back and mirrors that early nineties kinda flow shown by his rap seniors like Biggie and the Jigga Man and Nas.
With beats produced by the likes of East coast producer Statik Selektah, The Alchemist, MF Doom and fellow Pro-Era cohort member Kirk Knight, the mixtape ensures that regardless of your situation, listening to this will guarantee a good Summer night, which again exhibits the crazy word-play shown by the upcoming Hip hop golden star. As a prelude to his upcoming album, Bada$$ ensures rising expectations as he adds versatility to every track on this project. '95 til Infinity’ shows off a more abrasive side to Joey whereas ‘Hilary Swank’ exhibits a jazzy feel, while tracks like ‘LongliveSteelo’ shows off a softer side to Joey as he raps about the death of his fellow band mate Captial Steez. The diverse flair revealed on this project heightens the anticipation for his album.
When you listen to this mixtape you’ll agree that Joey Bada$$ as well as Pro Era as a whole are definitely hip hop’s next best thing. Keep up to date with the new movement: http://theproera.com/blog/
