The Pharcyde set to rock Koko this Thursday!

RnB/Hip Hop | Monday 10th September 2018 | Phil

In the early 1990s, Gangsta Rap dominated the US airwaves from coast to coast, with the likes of NWA, Tupac, Snoop Dogg, Mobb Deep and The Notorious BIG being amongst the most popular exponents of the form at that time.

In contrast to Gangsta Rap emerged artists such De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and of course, The Pharcyde. These now fabled groups provided a friendlier approach to rap music with a far more relaxed ethos, especially for those unaccustomed to the violent and highly crime-related lyricism that had become the most visible and commercially viable form of rap music.

Formed in 1989 in Los Angeles and originally made up of MCs FatLip, SlimKid3, Imani, and Bootie Brown, The Pharcyde continue to be hugely relevant today, influencing artists across the board with their totally unique, psychedelically tinted, West Coast sound.

Their 1992 debut ‘Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde’ is now regarded as a seminal hip hop record along with their 1995 follow up LP, ‘Labcabincalifornia’, which not only featured the production of a young and as of yet undiscovered J Dilla, but also enlisted the directorial stylings of Spike Jonze on the video for the hit single ‘Drop’, who very recently directed the video for the new Kanye West X Lil’ Pump video, ‘I Love It’.

With a reputation as one of the best live hip hop acts to ever grace the stage, you can catch The Pharcyde in London on their global TransCyde Express Tour at Camden’s Koko this Thursday 13th September, with support from Shadez The Misfit and DJ Chris P Cuts.
