Despicable Me 2 Trailer Released!
Wednesday 20th March 2013 | Adam
Not A Villainous Return.
Universal Studios hit it right in 2010 with Despicable Me, an enjoyable bad-guy-turns-good comedy that was a welcome antidote from the obnoxious, furry morons that rival studio DreamWorks peppered throughout the decade. Steve Carell’s hilarious turn as not-really-supervillain Gru and his horde of minions (the gibbering yellow dwarves in dungarees that serve as comic relief and a marketing executive’s wet dream) were instantly loveable, so it’s good to hear that they’ll all return on June 28th in Despicable Me 2.
Gru’s next outing finds him caring for the three children he adopted in the previous film: Margo (Miranda Cosgrave), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Elsie Fisher). This domestic bliss is abruptly ended by the arrival of Lucy Wild (Kristen Wiig), an agent for the Anti-Villain League, who kidnaps Gru and takes him to their underwater stronghold.
It is then revealed by Lucy’s boss, Silas Ramsbottom (Steve Coogan), that the organisation requires Gru’s help to stop another threat from destroying the world – an extra-terrestrial one, if the teaser trailer was anything to go by, and rumoured to be played by Al Pacino (perhaps on a path of redemption after his performance in Jack and Jill last year). From there, Despicable Me 2 promises to be an interesting take on the Bond parody, with Gru having to balance his task of saving the world with his duties as a very untraditional father figure.
For those just not excited enough by the voice cast brimming with comic royalty and the glorious possibilities of a Lipstick Taser, it’s probably necessary to mention that next year the Despicable Me minions are being graced with their own spin-off, so feel free to wet your britches with glee now.
If the trailer is anything to go by Despicable Me 2 should be as laugh out loud funny and visually impressive as its predecessor.
