Two Biopics, One YSL

Tuesday 19th February 2013 | Serena

As happened to Coco Chanel, the movie industry suddenly woke up realizing that no one has told the story of the famous couturier Yves Saint Laurent. Now next season we will have two films about him.

Since the fashion movies industry is expanding, more and more film makers are competing to tell the stories of those who create the beautiful clothes, the people that have become almost myth like during the decades.

As the label is under new management, one of the films has lost the 'Yves' and it's simply titled Saint Laurent, starring the unbelievably similar Gaspard Ulliel, already face of a famous Chanel ad campaign.  Even if the ad campaign of Saint Laurent is already out, the film is due to start shooting in spring, under the direction of Bertrand Bonello for the Mandarin Cinema and Films Distribution.

While PPR, the society that owns the brand YSL, doesn't want to take part in the battle of the biopics, Pierre Bergè, right arm and partner of the designer who died in 2008, gives his support to the other production Yves Saint Laurent.

Produced by WY Productions and SND and starring Pierre Niney, this second project will have access to the former atelier and the archives, bringing them forward in the race.

But this is not the first time that Yves Saint Laurent is on the big screen: in 2010, through the eyes of his partner Bergè and his closest friends , many private aspects of the designer were told in the documentary L'amour Fou.

Let's see what else we discover through not one, but two upcoming films. The fashion world is grateful.
