To even the most unschooled of cinema-goers (you know, those who just roll up to see some robots explode), it’s not difficult to see the huge role that special effects have in films. Used to some extent in almost every shot of a film, these visual effects have the huge responsibility of bringing to the screen what is not possible to film. What’s less obvious is the impact of British work in this aspect of filmmaking, as many would assume that all the top work would no doubt get done in Hollywood. However, Escape Studios is offering audiences the chance to see just how British special effects are, with the very first VFX Festival taking place between 10th - 13th October.

Taking place at various locations around London’s Soho, the four-day festival will delve particularly into the work of UK visual effects teams on some of the biggest and best recent blockbusters, such as Prometheus, John Carter, Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, The Golden Compass and X-Men. The programme is packed with workshops and activities led by some of the most respected and sought after VFX visionaries, showreel screenings and exclusive premieres for those with a talent for creativity.

The VFX Festival has been created by Escape Studios, the global academy for visual effects, to celebrate 10 years of excellence in the industry, which is one of Britain’s most successful - the visual effects industry is set to grow to annual revenues of £600m by 2014.

Founder of Escape Studios and The Visual Effects Festival, organiser DominicDavenport explains: “Through the huge success of films like Avatar, Inception and Prometheus, visual effects has been pushed to forefront of the film world. Yet it still remains a mystery.

“We’ve created The VFX Festival to reveal some of those mysteries and to introduce a new generation of creative talent into what is arguably one of the biggest booming industries in the current economic climate.

Details of the festival’s schedule, as well as tickets, are available at www.thevfxfestival.com so for all of you out there with a curiosity of just how Dobby was made, this may be for you.
