As London’s greatest detective, this Baker Street inhabitant and his trustworthy sidekick Watson return in a fast-paced action thriller that easily entertains its viewer. With the looming threat of the ridiculously ingenious Moriarty (played devilishly by Jared Harris) leaving him hot under the collar, Holmes may have met his match. A Game of Thrones is a much more efficient choice, if you wish to see Robert Downey Jnr(Iron Man, Iron Man 2) use his “Holmes vision” to battle the bad guys. The hand-to-hand combat is fluid and inventive and the slow-motion camera does its job well. Moriarty’s cunning almost has you rooting for him; you practically want to see the ramifications of his villainy. But Jude Law(Alfie, The Golden Compass)’s performance of the ever-devoted Watson stands out. His wisecracks and frustration at Holmes’ reasoning amuses easily and the film itself is a marvel to watch, whether it is on the big screen or on your plasma screen TV at home. Seeing as how it has just come out on DVD, now would be a good time to spend that odd £10 at Tesco.
