Amani and her band light up Camden

Other | Thursday 23rd October 2014 | Bobby

This Tuesday, we here at Guestlist were fortunate enough to see Peckham-based singer/songwriter Amani put on a genre-blending showcase with her band at Camden's Proud. Lighting an intimate gig up with amalgamated influences and styles, Amani looks every bit a performer capable of taking your tried and tested stage presence, and moulding it into a hypnotising showcase that will captivate as well as intrigue. Taking influence from a range of artists along the Bjork, Portishead and Billie Holiday vein, while blending it with hip hop conventions amongst others, Amani conducts her live band to great effect, simultaneously earmarking a refreshingly unique style that sets her apart, adding a mystery whilst drawing our attention.

Bringing a gaggle of honours with her which were used to full effect, Amani quickly encompassed the room, drawing all attention to herself as she swirled about the stage, lost in a wave of ambient trip-hop/RnB electronica (a massively sweeping generalisation on her sound). From performance distinctions to years of independently honing her singing and piano skills, her talents seem best suited to the live show.

Being given the opportunity to show off her live sound also gave her band the chance to show what they're capable of when put in front of an unusual mixture of both live and synthetic drums, as well as synths and midi-fighters. Mixing both acoustic and electronic sounds, situated either side of her, the band helped push a soulful tripped out vibe around the room, a sound that progressively drew the crowd nearer and nearer. Although putting on a relatively short set, creating such a buzz with the crowd in a small space of time is a comendable aspect of any live act, so it's given that an extended set would only help solidify her talents as a performer. Saying this, it's still early days for Amani and her band, so carrying on the way they went this past Tuesday means it's only a matter of time until their sound becomes a driving force in the musical world.
