Synths and Sensations: Future Islands - When One of Your Favourite Bands Comes to Your Little Part of the World

Other | Wednesday 31st July 2024 | The Hub

Ah, Crystal Palace on July 27, 2024—a date that will forever be etched in our minds, much like a tattoo you got in your rebellious teenage years. Future Islands, those lovable purveyors of synthpop melodrama, graced us with their presence at the slightly unconventional hour of 8:40 pm. And what a night it was.

Kicking things off with "King of Sweden," the band set the stage with an energy that could only be described as a caffeine-fueled sprint through a Swedish furniture store. The crowd, a delightful mix of die-hard fans and people who wandered in looking for the nearest pub, erupted in cheers. "The Tower" and "A Dream of You and Me" followed, giving us all the emotional whiplash we didn’t know we needed.

"Swept Inside" and "Ran" kept the adrenaline pumping, and I must say, I haven't seen that much enthusiasm since Black Friday at a discount electronics store. "Plastic Beach" and "Peach" provided a brief respite, like a serene beach vacation with a hurricane warning in the background.

The set continued with "Give Me the Ghost Back" and "The Sickness," which was apt considering the number of people who looked like they were having out-of-body experiences. "City's Face" brought us all back to reality, or at least as close to reality as you can get when Samuel T. Herring is performing his signature dance moves with the vigor of a man possessed.

A highlight of the evening was "Shadows," featuring the ethereal JOON. It was a duet that felt like a beautiful nightmare you don't want to wake up from. "Light House" and "The Thief" followed, keeping us all blissfully lost at sea. By the time "For Sure" and "Seasons (Waiting on You)" rolled around, the crowd was in a state of euphoric delirium, eagerly awaiting whatever auditory rollercoaster came next.

The main set ended with a bang. "Say Goodbye," "The Garden Wheel," and "Long Flight" were performed with such intensity that I half-expected Herring to spontaneously combust. "Tin Man" closed things out, leaving everyone wondering if they had indeed found a heart by the end of it all.

But the night wasn't over. Oh no. Future Islands returned for an encore, much to the delight of those who hadn’t yet succumbed to musical ecstasy. "Inch of Dust" and "Vireo's Eye" were performed with all the subtlety of a bull in a china shop—gloriously chaotic. "Corner of My Eye" gave us all a chance to reflect on our questionable life choices, and "Little Dreamer" wrapped up the evening, sending us off into the night with a smile on our faces and a ringing in our ears.

In summary, Future Islands' performance at Crystal Palace was a masterclass in how to deliver a night of unforgettable music and emotional rollercoasters. Their ability to connect with the audience was nothing short of magical. Fans left the venue in various states of bliss and bewilderment, already counting down the days until they could do it all over again. Because, let's be honest, who doesn't love a little musical mayhem to keep life interesting?
