Kanye West V Obama
President Obama, arguably the most powerful man in the world, last week concerned himself with some very serious issues indeed. One goes by the name of Kanye West and the other Kim Kardashian.
In an interview with Amazon Kindle Singles, Obama talked about how the American Dream is no longer what it used to be. He talks about the negative effect celebrity culture has had on America and how he believes that young Americans should not aspire to be like Kanye and Kim.
He states: "I do think what’s shifted is a notion that the wealthier you are, the more conspicuous consumption you engage in. The more successful you are, the more society should stay out of your way as you pursue the bigger house or the fancier jet or the bigger yacht. Were there things that all of us might have liked to have? Sure. But partly, I think, there also has been a shift in culture. There was not that window into the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Kids weren’t monitoring every day what Kim Kardashian was wearing, or where Kanye West was going on vacation, and thinking that somehow that was the mark of success."
He added: "I don't think people went around saying to themselves: 'I need to have a 10,000 square foot house. We weren't exposed to things we didn't have in the same way kids these days are. There was not that window into the lifestyles of the rich and famous."
Both Kim and Kanye are Obama supporters and a close source to the couple revealed that Kanye was shocked at the news that Obama was talking about him. West supposedly exclaimed "Whoa, even Obama taking shots at me now."
The source has also reported that Kanye believes that himself and Obama share something in common; that they are both trying to make history. The source stated “All he’s trying to do is inspire people through his music and go down in history as one of the greatest artist who ever held the mic. Same as Obama is trying to do as president — leave a legacy behind.” I wonder who would come out on top in 50 years time on a list of the most influential Americans of the last century? I think it's a close call.
But it wasn't just Kanye that was shocked at the remarks. Kris Kardashian, Kim's mother lashed back at Obama on her own chat show. "I find it so odd that he's picking on Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. I wasn't aware that we could only set the bar so high, and only dream so big."
She went on: "Kanye West, first of all, does not go on vacation, ever and Kim Kardashian is the hardest working lady in the world. She never sleeps, she never stops, she never slows down and works so hard for what she's got." Silly president not knowing that!
Obama's comments however seem to be counteractive. He's given both Kim and Kanye huge exposure and only helped to boost their publicity. The fact Obama's been caught talking about such matters only helps to prove his point that celebrities really do play a huge role in today's culture.
