Canadian's do electronic music well, Katie Stelmanis is the icing on the cake.
There has been a recent outbreak of electronic music that has come from Canada. Last year we saw Grimes cross the Atlantic with her very unique take on the genre, while Toronto based indie band Austra have now become the sound of 2013. What puts this band above the rest is the sharp almost operatic vocals of frontwoman Katie Stelmanis. She has the fashion style of Lady Gaga, the talent of Joanna Newsom and the stage presence of Natasha Khan.
Their latest album 'Olympia' is a mix of electronic, classical, dance, pop and folk. 'Annie (Oh Muse, You)' sounds like a club tune from the early 90s, while first single 'Home` is folktronica at its finest.
Despite the quality that Austra clearly possess they are hardly heard of outside the blogosphere. Unless you pick up a copy of a trendy magazine, they won't be on your radar. I think that's a good thing, it means Katie and her band won't be forced to go mainstream by the hands of Simon Cowell.
