Flashmob draws a line in the sand on debut album “Sundown”
Irish-Italian DJ and producer, Flashmob, releases his debut artist album “Sundown” via Flashmob Records.
As a format, albums have always represented a very personal statement of artistic intent – even more so today, in an era of standalone singles and streaming edits. Painstakingly created over the course of four years, Flashmob’s debut artist album “Sundown” is the sum of his experiences and influences from over a decade in the industry – a distilled representation of creative vision, seasoned artistry, and an untarnished excitement for what is still to come.
“Sundown” was an unintended project born from a time of uncertainty and an enforced stillness that was experienced across the world, Sandro explains: “Covid had obliged me to reset, stay home and think about who I am, what I do and mainly why I do it. Why did I decide to get into this in the first place? It wasn’t to be famous nor to make money... I was only looking for happiness.”
Without the distractions of touring, he was free to embrace creativity without the restrictions that ‘real life’ so often puts on it: “The time at home alone really give me the opportunity to stop, reset and then go back to the studio organically and finally make music spontaneously without deadlines, genres nor labels in mind – free from everything. So this album is all mine, there are no intentions other than to make music for me and to express the feelings of my love for life and electronic music.”
Whilst still firmly focused on the dance floor, “Sundown” is a coherent fusion of the styles, genres and sounds that have inspired Sandro’s journey, cohesive in their holistic relationship to an artist who has travelled the world many times over, living and breathing electronic music. From the underground house vibes of “Feel The Night” and “Right Now” to a personal expression of what a timeless club track should sound like in “Time Chance”, the album guides the listener through a series of after-dark moments with ease.
Alongside the house sounds that many will associate with the Flashmob name, “Sundown” skilfully displays a much broader sonic palate that pays homage to a more mainstream sound in “Dance With Me Tonight” and “Welcome To My World”, and pushes the producer into new territory with “Sundown”, “Not Like You” and “All Over Me’ showing a brand new side to the Flashmob sound. The underlying freedom that the LP represents is found in “Twin Flames” which sits comfortably between genres with a stunning vocal from Laila Walker, and “What’s Next” acts as a conclusion to the album that looks to the future and offers a suggestion of what might lie ahead for the Irish-Italian producer.
Capturing the primal energy and escapism that dance music offers to all without judgement, “Sundown” is a tonic for the soul – as much for the listener as it is for the artist who created it, he suggests: “the album is also an expression of not wanting to be part of the dog race anymore – not wanting to see music as a competition but as a medicine; it’s an expression of how you can do anything on your own if you want to”.
Looking to the future, “Sundown” is a line in the sand for the producer – a culmination of the sounds that defined his career to date alongside those that have fed the soul in private. Crafted without pressure, allowing time to focus on the details, the project is a rich offering that brings out the very best elements of electronic music, and presents them to the world without fear or expectation – only a flame of excitement that cannot and will not be extinguished.
