‘Got Bars’ music program for Chicago youth
Chicago born rappers Kanye West and Rhymefest are set to join forces and set up a music program for the youth in their home city.
The 10 week program due to start this coming winter is aimed at those aged 15-24 and has set itself the target of becoming a constructive outlet for those who may find themselves in trouble. The program, named ‘Donda’s House’ after the late Donda West, Kanye’s mother will be run with partner-in-rhyme, Rhymefest. The two have collaborated before musically on tracks such as 'Jesus Walks' which Rhymefest was won a Grammy for co-writing; and also 'Brand New'. This will be their first venture together outside of the music game.
Donnie Smith, a high-school teacher and wife to Rhymefest will be steering the organisation of the program to market it properly and get as many people involved as possible. Rhymefest and Ye will work with the students to develop their creative and musical side. Rhymefest spoke of the honour to be able to be a part of something representing Donda West in something so inspiring. Rhymefest said “‘Got Bars' will change our youth musically, get them healthy and keep them busy in a creative, peaceful environment. I know it will be an even stronger program because of our partnership with the ARK of St. Sabina.”
The program is set to focus on the areas of improving physical health, teaching life lessons and centrally to the program, creating a written piece of music that will end up being performed and possibly recorded and published.
