From blissful beaches that look like they have come straight out of a utopian movie to trekking with elephants in the sub-tropical jungle, Thailand is the perfect place to spend a few months getting away from the mundane drudge of life.
Here are a couple of things to make the most of in this amazing part of south-east Asia:
It’s cheap as fuck
With an average meal costing around 60p, there is no excuse to not indulge. Bargaining in places is expected but don’t take the piss, this is people's livelihood.
The food is amazing
No matter how much it tries to be replicated back at home, a mouth-watering green curry or delicious pad Thai will never taste the same as it does over there. Veggies and vegans just watch out for fish sauce.
Learn (some of) the language
As well as getting ‘local’ prices, you will get less harassed and more respected. Plus, it’s just polite.
Do a bit of research on day-trips
The thought of riding on an elephant or posing with a tiger may sound great, but the truth is these animals are treated very badly! There are some great sanctuaries for rescued animals that are just as an amazing experience. Such as the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary, Elephant Nature Park, Thai Elephant Refuge & Boon Lott's Elephant Sanctuary.
The partying is immense
Go to any island and there will be neon face paint, buckets of vodka and awesome baselines that could wake the dead. The most famous party is, of course, the full moon party in Koh Pah Ngan which occurs ones a month.
Thailand is genuinely one of the best places in the world to explore but it is also important to respect Thai culture! Remember: do not touch a Thai person's head, don’t show the soles of your feet, do not disrespect royalty, don’t take the image of Buddha in vein and don't touch the animals. Follow these simple rules and let the fun begin!
