Snoop neva left and he still got the juice (and gin!)

RnB/Hip Hop | Tuesday 6th June 2017 | Phil

Ask anyone from my generation to name three rappers they know, and the name of Snoop Doggy Dogg is almost certain to be one of the first to come up.

The Long Beach Crew's most infamous member, many of us millennials grew up to the unmistakably super smooth sound of Snoop's voice and stylish delivery of his raps, forever backed by some of Dr. Dre and Warren G's most popular 'G Funk' beats, never forgetting to mention the timelessly classy crooning and vocals of the late great Nate Dogg.

His 1993 LP 'Doggystyle' became an instant classic with a multitude of hit singles including 'Gin & Juice', 'Who Am I (What's My Name?)' and of course 'Gz & Hustlas'. It is these tracks, along with the Pharrell Williams produced 'Drop It Like It's Hot' that the Big Bow Wow is most commonly known for.

Not to mention being one of 'Two of America's Most Wanted' with fellow Death Row legend Tupac Shakur, Snoop now has a whopping 15 studio produced albums to his name including 'The Doggfather' on Master P's No Limit Records which means there's every chance that you've had a proper dance to one of Snoop's many hits at some point in your life, even if you can't recall it.

Following the more laid back vibes of 2015 LP 'Bush', Snoop went back towards his gangsta roots in the collab LP 'Cuzznz' with his DPG family member Daz Dillinger and also with his last LP 'Coolaid' which featured the likes of Jeremih, Swizz Beatz, and Too Short.

His 15th studio LP that came out during May is named 'Neva Left' and is a clear stab against all the doubters, haters and industry know-it-alls saying Snoop fell off.

Having briefly become Snoop Lion following a Rasta revelation a few years ago, Snoop Dogg is now back, with 'Neva Left' being a firm indicator that he is coming back to his dazzling best.

With features from East Coast stalwarts such as KRS-One, Method Man & Redman, along with tracks that pay homage to Wu-Tang & A Tribe Called Quest classics, there is much goodness to take in.  One song,'Vapors', that also shares its name and subject matter with a classic Biz Markie track, even has Snoop recounting several stories in the throwback Slick Rick style of 'Lodi Dodi'. Also, for the true beat connoisseurs, I'm sure there is a vertiable feast of old soul and funk samples all over this record.

A record that clearly identifies Snoop as one of the true old school advocates whilst showing he can cut it with the new wave kids of hip-hop, 'Neva Left' is an album which hip hop heads will be happy to hear at home in their bedroom, at a bangin' club night or even at a rambunctious house party where the guests ain't leavin till six in the mornin'.
