The Epic Hamilton Mixtape Review

There is so much to enjoy on this album. Lin Manuel Miranda, the hit show’s creator has taken the show’s themes about immigration and the underdog aspiring to greatness and reworked the lyrics in parts to make it more contemporary and tie into the conversation on modern race relations. This is explored on tracks like My Shot and Wrote My Way Out but it really slams on Immigrants (We Get The Job Done) with its strong bars, grime and reggaeton influences.
However Miranda doesn’t let things get so heavy that it sinks. The album switches styles up constantly. Continuously shifting to more accessible pop/R&B tracks like those from Jill Scott, Sia even Jimmy Fallon (yes THAT Jimmy Fallon) to brighten things. There’s also more soul tinged turns from Alicia Keys and John Legend. All of which balance the sound of indignation and desperate urgency by grounding the album in a reality that is as complex as the show and issue itself- simultaneously heart-breaking and hopeful.
There are a great number of artists involved andThe Hamilton Mixtape crushes it time and time again.
