Why have dubsteps biggest artists withdrawn?
Thursday 20th June 2013 | Kledion
Both dubstep producers Benga and Skream, arguably the founders of dubstep, have withdrawn from the genre. Such revelations come as they feel they have entered a new generation of music which their own dubstep has no place in. He was quoted in NME saying “I believe now that certain artists are the future, I don't want to be any part of dubstep anymore”. Words cutting deep in devoted fans that have followed their music from the beginning of the genre, since its establishment in Croydon thirteen years ago.
Nevertheless, this would appear a noble gesture from both artists who effectively are handing over the torch to younger talent meaning they can explore their own. Benga, 26 is currently working on his new album with Skream and Artwork as mega-group Magnetic Man. Whilst Skream has further indicated a new direction in his own music after being inspired by Daft Punk’s electrifying rebirth of disco. His thirteen year love affair with dubstep has “ended on a high”.
It is sad to see but exciting at the same time. Two of the biggest players in the dubstep game are no more, leaving us to wonder who will take this brave new genre on. Although, many further questions are asked of what exciting material Benga and Skream will be unleashing their musical genius upon next. Only time will tell, and let us hope time is good to us.
