Review: LWE presents Shogun Audio Warehouse Party - 26.4.13

Friday 3rd May 2013 | Jenny

Following on from the mammoth success that was the last London Warehouse Events presents Shogun takeover of Great Suffolk Street, the label giants laid down another unmissable night at the South London warehouse last weekend. With advanced tickets flying out upon its announcement, it was no surprise to see the buzzing stream of people lining the outside of those now-familiar arches upon arrival. The line up including heavyweights Noisia, Friction, The Prototypes, Alix Perez , EZ and Spectrasoul amongst others; Shogun Audio know exactly how to reward their dedicated fans.

Two of my favourite producers at the moment took the reins with the warm up slot of 10-11; Technimatic’s silky smooth transitions and warm flowing liquid sound was the ideal starting point to ease in the early crowd. I was disappointed to miss all but snippets of The Prototypes but they were storming away and constantly switching up the pace when I did catch bits – an exciting year for these guys. Next on my list was Room 1 for Alix Perez’ album showcase – the hugely anticipated ‘Chroma Chords’ drops on the 20th May and this exclusive set served to display the versatility of this innovative producer. I entered the (now pretty jammed) space to the sounds of latest single ‘Annie’s  Song’ – with live vocals from the talented Sam Wills; whose clean tones engulfed the room. The legendary Jehst and Foreign Beggars (who I’d seen post a cheeky hint on Twitter earlier) both jumped on MC duties, absolutely killing it with their raw live energy.

I initially meant to only pass through Room 2 as I wanted to catch Spectrasoul from the start but got utterly way-laid by the old school rollers being dropped by DJ EZ. Such good vibes filled this smaller room  (particularly during Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’) and it was nice to have a real dance around without having a contact lens smashed out (which happened to me earlier in the main room)! Catching highlights from the brilliant Spectrasoul – who busy were sampling plenty of fresh sounds– it was straight back towards the monstrous sound of Noisia echoing through the arches.  I picked out bits of their recent work with The Upbeats alongside a whole of host of classics such as ‘Diplodocus’ and ‘Split the Atom’- all to massive crowd reactions.

Finishing off proceedings for me was the sound of Friction (paired with the ever impressive Linguistics); always guaranteed to keep a crowd guessing. Among the highlights: the monstrous ‘King Pin’ (dropped several times throughout the night), Calyx & Teebee’s ‘Strung Out VIP’ (which works SO well echoing around that warehouse) Brookes Brothers/Culture Shock ‘Rework’ and dBridge’s classic ‘True Romance VIP.’ Icicle continued to absolutely destroy the room from 4-5 whilst Randall brought the still-bouncing crowd to a reluctant finish alongside SP:MC. Top work as ever, Shogun and London Warehouse Events
