Grand Quarters - Boldy James' EP

Friday 8th March 2013 | Ronnie

Boldy James' EP Grand Quarters is now available on iTunes! The EP was finally completed and put online three days ago after its first track, 'One of One', was released almost a year ago in August 2012. Grand Quarters contains six tracks titled 'One of One', 'For The Birds', 'JIMBO', 'Getting Flicked', 'Come Here feat. Peechie Green', and 'I Can Pull It Off ft. Poppy Bricks and Kevo Da Kid.'

Boldy James is an American rapper from Detroit, who came out with his first mix tape, Consignment:Favor For A Favor last year, which contained 10 songs. This year, Grand Quarters shows his growth as his songs are continuing to keep it real. It's important to note most of his songs are relatively chill and kick back tunes.

His first track, 'One of One', is a chill song with good flow and a solid instrumental. James' voice moves steadily with the beat and the musicality of the song overall is done very well. One of One leaves a good impression and sets up the rest of the EP as its modern sounds resonate through your ears.

'For The Birds', his most popular song uses a funky sci-fi beat that zones you out as he spits smoothly over the chill beats. "How he expect to fly if he don't ever spread his wings" is just one of the many thoughtful lines Boldy James delivers throughout this EP.

'JIMBO' is more of a gritty song but continues to experiment with funky instrumentals. In this song, Boldy takes on a darker tone and talks a little bit about his life in the past. This compliments well with his earlier nonchalant tracks.

'Gettin Flicked' opens up with a hard alarm instrumental. Another sci-fi beat, 'Gettin Flicked' trips you out. However, Boldy brings you back in with his steady enthusiastic voice.

Grand Quarter's next track is more of an upbeat euphoric song. The instrumental resounds with victory and makes you picture grand golden staircases with angels flying high above. Meanwhile, Peechie Green, who is featured in this track, drops a light chorus that opens up Boldy's calm lines though you are too preoccupied with the overall hype of the instrumental.

Boldy James' final song, 'I Can Pull It Off ft. Poppy Bricks and Kevo Da Kid' features another upbeat beat this time with three MCs. This creates a mesh of vocals as sac artist hypes the other up.

Overall, Grand Quarters is a pretty solid EP. It's good to see passionate MC's with aspirations and Boldy James drops some dope lines. That said, I suggest you go and check him out!
