Countdown to Foals’ Holy Fire
Over the past 4 or 5 months, Foals have been slowly releasing tracks from their upcoming third album Holy Fire, and various other clips on their youtube channel of them in their studio, recording their mellow sounds we love to hear.
The countdown has reached it’s final days, and in preparation of the album being released on 11th February, what do we know so far?
The first track to be released was Inhaler. When this was released, we noticed that Foals have taken a rather funky turn with this record. Similar to Miami on Total Life Forever. This then left us guessing, is this what the whole album will be like? Lead singer, Yannis, stated when it was unveiled last year that a new album was in the pipeline, the new material on the album would be "unashamedly funk". So he said that, then released Inhaler, living up to his word, the track is definitely ‘funky’.
My Number was the next track to be released, and his turned out to be just as upbeat and funky as Inhaler. With those toe-tapping guitar riffs Foals have always been famous for, turning into anthems at all the coolest indie discos, the track told us that Foals are moving from strength to strength with this third album.
Late Night was released with a video of the band playing in their studio, with shiny new equipment, they are all still completely in their element, and clearly still enjoying what they are doing. Even though this track is a great deal more low-key than the two tracks released previous to this, it still has the same impact on us. Much similar to the journey we are taken in Spanish Sahara on Total Life Forever, Late Night builds and builds not to quite as a dramatic climax like Spanish Sahara, but it leaves us feeling just as good.
Nothing Left Unsaid, is just the ambient track we have been yearning from this album, we need just a little break from all the funky upbeat guitar riffs, and Nothing Left Unsaid provides that. The delicate keys and strings opening the song, are dreamy and draw us into Yannis’ voice which starts a minute in. Similar to Late Night’s video, we see the boys recording in their cool looking studio again. These two later releases could well be the most heartfelt songs on the album, there’s nothing more intimate than a band letting you into the place they are making their music, and Foals let us in with these two songs’ videos.
An extremely promising album, and not long to wait now!
