Reggae | Thursday 24th January 2013 | Polly

Jamaican ‘jazz on dub’ pioneer making a New Name for herself in 2013.

Jamaican singer/roots musician/activist/poet Janine or Jah9 is accredited with developing her very own musical style, jazz on dub. A style she describes, as “jazz vocals on heavy drum and bass roots sounds”. Whilst the blend may be contemporary, the components are old, Jah9’s musical inspirations firmly rooted in both genres’ rich history, her music reflects the work of artists like Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Mad Professor, King Tubby as well as of course, Bob Marley. Jah9 first found international recognition when she made a guest appearance on Protoje’s 2011 Album, 7 Year Itch, featuring on the final track, ‘After I’m Gone’. In July 2012 Jah9 opened the 5th day of the 12 day celebration of 50 years of Jamaican Independence, Respect Jamaica 50th at London’s O2 Arena with her latest single ‘Jungle’. Jungle has been released ahead of her debut album New Name that she has been working on with Stone Love’s producer Rory Gilligan. New Name is due to be released in February 2013, lyrically Jah9 focuses on the current social and political struggles faced by people in Jamaica, as well as themes of gender, love and spirituality. Jah9 is determined to use her music to inspire and spread messages of positivity, believing “Love is really the answer, as simple as it sounds”. She is immensely talented and a strong black female role model, she advocates values of sisterhood and rejects the false idea that women must be in competition and conflict with each other. With the support of influential producer Rory Gilligan and the legendary DJ Rodigan, Jah9 is set for big things in 2013. Jazz on dub is music that speaks to your soul and transports you to a place of beauty. New Name should be on music lovers’ download list everywhere.
