Birth of an Icon: RiFF RAFF

RnB/Hip Hop | Monday 17th December 2012 | Jake

Jody Christian (otherwise known as Riff Raff, MTV Riff Raff or Jody Highroller) is a rapper/reality TV star from Houston, Texas. He first got into the industry in 2008 when he started to upload videos of himself rapping under the name ‘MTV Riff Raff’ and then in 2009 was a contestant on the MTV reality show ‘From G’s to Gents’ but was eliminated from the show in the second episode, even though he wasn’t on the show for long he caught viewers eyes with his unique dress style and his tattoos (he has MTV & worldstar hip hop logos inked on him).

Later that year he linked up with Dirt Nasty (real name: Simon Rex, he’s a rapper/comedian/actor) when he got Riff Raff’s number from a freestyle video he’d uploaded onto YouTube. The two met and subsequently started recording music together (they are still releasing music together under the name Three Loco, which also includes comedian Andy Milonakis).

Soon after this Soulja Boy’s label Stacks On Deck Money Gang (shortened to SODMG) took an interest in Riff Raff and signed him, this didn’t last very long though and he parted ways with the record label around a year later when he was picked up by Diplo’s label ‘Mad Decent’ and since then he has been working with Diplo, Three Loco and Action Bronson among others and his most recent release ‘Hologram Pandas’ with Dame Grease was released for free under the Mad Decent label, you can find this on datpiff).

His style is hard to describe, he raps in a kind of stream of consciousness style and is probably stylistically closest to Lil B (another ex-SODMG affiliate) although the two do differ greatly.

He has been heard to describe himself as “a product of the internet” and that he was “born yesterday”, and is definitely an artist to look into, he has an extensive (unofficial) discography on DatPiff which is made up of freestyles and YouTube videos that he has done. On the official side of things you should download “Birth of an Icon’ and the more recent ‘Hologram Panda’.
