Phaeleh's tour hits London
Thursday 15th November 2012 | Ruth
The end of this month sees the inimitable Phaeleh kick off a 5-week tour, starting in Belgium, ending in Australia and making a welcome stop in the fair city of London on the 30th. One of the most exciting artists to emerge onto the dubstep scene in the last few years, Phaeleh is proving why this is a musical genre that is far from 'over'; bringing a unique and atmospheric sound to a genre currently saturated with aggressive wobble and teenagers looking for a moshing opportunity outside of metal.
But aggressive wobble shan't be found here. Although technically defined as Dubstep, Phaeleh's music resides in the group of which artists like Burial and Submotion Orchestra are also part of the family; Dubstep-influenced, sure - but simultaneously almost undefinable. Appropriating elements of Garage, Trip-hop, Dubstep and Ambient Electronica, Phaeleh's music provides a melodic balance of heavy bass and delicate orchestral sounds, beautiful harmonies and haunting vocals that make for an instantly recognisable sound often described, more than anything else, as 'atmospheric'. Bass-laden enough to dance to, but at the same time chilled enough for your pre-bedtime musical injection; beautiful enough to put a smile on your face, yet simultaneously heartbreaking to the point of almost making you cry, it is precisely this juxtaposition that makes Phaeleh and his music so intriguing and enjoyable - as well as reaching an audience far beyond the usual Dubstep demographic.
Having not graced London with his presence since July, when he played Fabric's smallest room amid a club-wide line-up so massive that he could've easily been overlooked by all but his die-hard fans, his London tour stop this month at Cable in London Bridge forces Phaeleh into the spotlight as the headline act (alongside DJ Die) in the main room, providing a sound system that will do all the subtleties of his music justice.
With support from Logan Sama & JME, Ikonika and Urban Nerds' Rattus Rattus, this is a night that looks set to provide an eclectic blend of Dubstep-inspired sounds, whilst delivering music that's anything but predictable.
To get you in the mood, here's a personal favourite (and incidentally, the man himself's favourite release to date!):
