Lana Del Rey On A Bad Day

Yesterday our favourite sultry songstress who rocks her fake nails like nobodies business dropped three track all from unknown destinations, and where they are headed, well that's totally up to you. But this is a little bit what they are like...
Serial Killer
The first thing that strikes me as I listen to Lana Del Rey’s new song Serial Killer is its RnB inspired beats. Like many of her other songs there is still the tell tale undulating vocals and classical string elements. I have a feeling that this is going to be one of those songs that I will like better the more I listen to it. Although perhaps seeing it live will kill it for me completely, let us not mention her SNL debacle. As I come to the end of her new track I am left with an overwhelming sense of her iconic blue eyed soul sound interweaved with an RnB essence that wasn’t particularly present on her last album. It’s a refreshing change without being so drastic as to alter what this pouty lipped songstress is known for.
Summer of Sam
Old school nineties mixed with a little MIA and some very “white girl” rap/singing is blowing my brains right now. It’s a totally different take to her usual smooth melodic tunes. The only thing that hasn’t changed much is her usual talk/singing way of delivering her lyrics. This strange attempt at rapping sounds like a mixture of too many cigarettes and talking while having sex. All just a little bizarre and awkward to listen to. Perhaps she should just stick to singing, at least that can be perfected in a studio as for the strained sex voice, not so much. Call me stupid but these lyrics...
Baby I’m a cinnamon girl
Keeping it fresh, on the e-east side
Baby I’m a vitamin girl
Keepin in touch your cherry pie
B-A-D-D-E-S-T, baddest girl in NYC
Baby I’a a dangerous girl`
You should stay away from me
I’ve been murdering, I’m murdering on
I be murdering, I’m murdering on.
...and the image that Lana Del Rey represents, what with her bought lips and millionaire daddy, well quite frankly they don’t go together well. The upbeat feel of this song certainly doesn’t match her apparent joy for murdering as her lyrics would imply. To be totally honest, I can’t say I’m a fan.
Ooh Baby
High school garage band, I’m not sure what else needs to be said, but prepping for a middle school Battle of the Bands is what this reminds me of. This song is hugely simple musically and the lyrics are not her best. And holy heck, if I have to hear about sucking on lollipops or of her drinking some sort of carbonated beverage ever again I’ll scream. Oh God! I know what it reminds me of, Paris Hilton’s little gem Stars are Blind...how sad! The only redeeming feature is the bridge of this song which become a little more bearable, cutting out a lot of the computer generated beats and underlying sound. Here she sounds a little more like herself. I’m all for change, but it seems a little silly to change so drastically and so badly that it detracts from what people liked about you in the first place. Well Ooh Baby just isn’t for me.
