The genius that is Koan Sound
Emerging as an electronic band in 2005, Koan Sound compromises of two Bristol based artists Will Weeks and Jim Bastow, and are a shining production of the dubstep and electronic music scene that has developed across the UK in the last few years.
Originally influenced by acoustic based music, Koan Sound have cited the music of The Prodigy and Noisia as major influences for their sound. In 2011 they released their breakthrough single ‘Max Out EP’, taking their sound to a whole new level - moving away from the 140bpm style that is distinctive to dubstep and drum and bass and creating an incredibly intriguing sound of their own. After joining Skrillex’s imprint OWSLA they released their biggest single ‘Funk Blaster EP’, achieving the no. 1 spot on the Beatport releases category. To round off a truly unbelievable year for the duo, they secured the award for the ‘Best Breakthrough Artist’ at the dubstep music awards in Birmingham with a set that was nothing short of breathtaking.
I realise that to use the term ‘genius’ is indeed a bold claim, however I feel that these guys warrant such praise because what they have created extends way past anything, in musical terms, that is being produced: it is not just their two outstanding singles, or even their award after just a short time on the circuit, and it is certainly not the fact they have caught the attention of currently the biggest dubstep artist in the world. For me their genius lies in the freshness and the funkiness of their beats: an amalgamation of hip-hop and dubstep with a unique twist that reels the listener in and at no point do we ever feel like letting go. Given their recent arrival into the music scene, we can expect more of their greatness to come and will undoubtedly be hearing more from them.
But don’t take my word for it, listen and give into them yourselves.
