Matilda Review

Tuesday 27th March 2012 | Osh

Whether you have seen the legendary film or not, you are guaranteed to have a fantastic night at Matilda.  No matter your age, gender or background this show is a must see for everyone!  Complete with amazing effects, colour, and artistic decor it is captivating and captures a youthful atmosphere beautifully.  You will be stunned by the performances of the children, who possess talent beyond their years!  It is lovely to see the childlike innocence but there is also plenty of humour and clever wit for adults too!  The script is fantastic and will keep you entertained throughout the duration.  All the pivotal scenes are present, including the choky, Bruce Bogtrotter and the famous chocolate cake, the endless trips to the library with Miss Phelps.  Therefore it is easily recognisable to the movie. However there is enough of its own features including brand new music to make it original.  The unity amongst the cast is powerful, the emotion is believable and you imagine yourself in the playground for the night, wanting to join in their fun.  The vocals are stunning, and Matilda’s performance was effortless and magical.  She is believable and you want her to overcome the obstacles she faces to eventually succeed and triumph.  Miss Trunchball is played by a male (with a Mancunian accent), much to everyone’s amusement.  He plays the role perfectly and even gets a cheer from the audience at the end!  The performance also got a well deserved standing ovation and it promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable night.

It was written by Dennis Kelly with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.  Both men should be incredibly proud of the masterpiece they created!
