Pioneers of Percussion @ Scala

Other | Monday 11th November 2013 | Katrine

The grandson of Sergei Prokofiev, Gabriel, founded Nonclassical in 2004 as a record label and club event. In the past nine years fourteen albums have been created, combining the work of modern classical composers with the production skills of electronic musicians. The event has created a singularly distinctive opportunity for lovers of both ends of the music spectrum to appreciate what is mistakenly perceived as an outdated style in an environment suited to art in the 21st century. So far it has taken place once a month at the Macbeth in Hoxton, as well as various nearby venues, however, as part of their Pioneers of Percussion Festival, the night is heading over to North London’s legendary Scala for what will be its most monumental spectacle yet.

The event takes place on 16th November and is the headline act of the entire festival. Highlights will include the second of John Cage’s series Construction, complete with a troupe of water gongs and thunder sheets, as well as the influential work Drumming by Steve Reich performed in its entirety. The leaders in a revolutionary and challenging form of contemporary composition, from past or present, will transfix audiences both with previous knowledge of the genre and without. Take your chance to learn more about the journey of percussion-fuelled music over the last one hundred years while listening to innovative and abstract DJs, and enjoying a few drinks.
