Masta Killa kills it once more

RnB/Hip Hop | Thursday 5th October 2017 | Phil

Masta Killa is probably not one of the first names that comes to mind when you mention the Wu Tang Clan.

Unlike the more popular members of the clan such as Ghostface Killah and Raekwon, Masta Killa has rarely been one to bask in the limelight, instead working more in the background, steadily releasing music and featuring on an array of other projects over the years.

Having not dropped an LP since 2012’s Selling My Soul, the new album features numerous up and coming Wu affiliates as well as many of the original clan members, not to mention the recently deceased and greatly missed Sean Price and Prodigy of Mobb Deep.

The album itself is the perfect vehicle for Masta Killa to further maintain and exhibit his murderously smooth style, with 9th Wonder, Dame Grease, and PF Cuttin handling the production alongside the man himself. This small production team has created a soundscape that is the perfect for Masta Killa to express himself in the manner we have come to know and love over the years since Enter The 36 Chambers.

Whether it's the loved-up soulful vibes of ‘Flex With Me’, the downright hard New York style of ‘Real People’ or the unadulterated Masta Killa feel of ‘Noodles, Pt.1’, the beats all have the hallmarks of that time honoured signature Wu-Tang sound, from the soul samples that harp back to the heyday of the Motown era to the infamous kung fu movie sound bites that became synonymous with Wu-Tang's producers such as Rza himself and other producers entrusted to rep the Wu such as Mathematics and 9th Wonder.

This record is suitable for heavy rotation on any hip-hop heads playlist and, if you're a fan of the Wu, it is another album to obsess over with Loyalty is Royalty quite possibly being Masta Killa’s best album yet.
