Cormega brings a taste of New York to London

RnB/Hip Hop | Wednesday 30th August 2017 | Phil

Die hard fans crammed into Chip Shop Brixton to witness one of New York city’s finest underground rappers do his thing.

Chip Shop Brixton has played host to many heavyweight U.S rap acts and last Saturday was no exception. Fans of east coast rap will already know who Cormega is. For those of you that don't, he is part of a golden generation of MCs that all grew up in and around the borough of Queens including Mobb Deep and Nas. Due to the dizzying success of some of those around him, he is often noted as being one of the most slept on and underrated rappers in the game, though he has always commanded the respect of his peers through his powerful, heartfelt lyricism and as an emcee who never even came close to selling out.

The evening started off with Mega selling his freshly signed merchandise including vinyl, CDs and his recently published book ‘Understanding The True Meaning’, a collection of stories and thoughts celebrating 15 years of his widely lauded album ‘The True Meaning’. Warming things up Harlesden's Da Fly Hooligan spat some north west London fire with a quick run through of tracks from recently released albums ‘FYLPM’ and ‘Ray Winstone’, including the certified head nodder ‘Weed Smoke’.

Soon after Cormega grabbed the mic to rumbling applause with fans in the front row so hyped by his presence that the front of the crowd almost instantly became a mosh pit. Starting with a tribute to Prodigy of Mobb Deep, soon Mega was wading into a selection of his most iconic tracks from ‘True Meaning’ and ‘Mega Philosophy’, ending with his notorious verse on ‘Affirmative Action’, a track from Nas’ second album that cemented both Cormega and the other members of The Firm status as some of New York's hottest rappers.

Big Ups and Shout Outs to Curoc from Son of Noise for hosting, Billy Bizznizz of the legendary London Posse, Teddy Ted of Mi Soul Radio and DJ Harmony for holding down the 1’s and 2's.
