The V&A is curating the first-ever international retrospective of the extraordinary career of megastar musician David Bowie, one of the world's most influential performers.

The exhibition brings together more than 300 objects for the first time, including handwritten lyrics, spectacular costumes, photography, film, music videos and Bowie's own instruments.

The show charts the star's life from his humble beginnings as an unknown Brixton man called David Jones, to the rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust, the persona adopted by the musician in the 1970s, and then to Bowie's dramatic comeback in the 1980s.

Standout exhibits include:

• Ziggy Stardust bodysuits designed by Freddie Burretti in 1972
• Album sleeve artwork by Guy Peellaert and Edward Bell
• Set designs created for the Diamond Dogs tour of 1974
