"Every detail counts, you can feel there's work, passion and dedication" - Bastian Bux talks Elrow and more

House | Wednesday 30th August 2017 | Arren

Bastian Bux is one of the brightest new talents in the house and techno scene.

He's a regular signing on Coyu's Suara, Elrow resident and his name frequents line ups across Europe and beyond. As time goes on the Spaniard's career only gets better, and recently he's seen his music released on Digweed's Bedrock and Nicole Moudaber's MOOD. As a DJ he's also propelled his way to the forefront with a headline slot at Elrow's Mysteryland stage, and playing a back to back special with Ramiro Lopez and Coyu in Ibiza to count among his seemingly endless list of dates.

He was recently in London for the huge Elrow festival in Stratford and Village Underground after. We managed to catch him to answer a few questions where we talk touring, his friendship with Coyu and what makes Elrow tick.

What was your first thought this morning?
Will I have enough time to have my breakfast before my pickup? Something like that!

What's got you motivated right now?
Everything I haven't done yet, every place I haven't visited, every experience I haven't had. I'm a super challenging and curious human being. It's easy for me to get motivation from different sources because there's a lot of things to discover out there. The world is so big that sometimes, I wonder how cool it would be to live a hundred parallel lives to experience it all!

What's your schedule like right now?
Pretty tight, as it's been the whole summer, but I have to say that it looks a bit more relaxed for the next weeks, at least for now!

Fabrik in Marid, where Bastain Bux closed earlier this year.

What has been your party of the year so far?
Mmmm... tough one. Closing Fabrik, Madrid was a super intense experience, and also Elrow's 7th anniversary in Barcelona. During both parties, the energy from the crowd was something out of this world. I'm not a party animal, I do love DJing, so for me what makes a good party is a crowd willing for a good ride.

How was Elrow Town in London last weekend?
Just perfect. The organization, the vibe, the crowd, the crew... everything went super good during our biggest show to date!

As one of their residents, what’s been your favourite Elrow show so far?
Maybe the party we did in Shanghai. That was one of my favourites. It was our first time in China, also for me personally too, and it was a beautiful experience. I love discovering new places and cultures and spending time with my partners from Elrow who are like my family now.

What does Elrow do that's special?
Everything. They take care of the details, from the small to the big - every single one. It may sound simple but I think that most parties fail at that. In Elrow every detail counts, you can feel there work, passion and dedication behind every single aspect.

You’ve been making some of your dreams come true, have you got any more dreams to fulfil?
Some time ago I had a lot of "professional goals", but now I think that my dreams are more intimate and personal. But yeah, there's a lot. One of them is to write a book, someday. Serious talk!

You have a close friendship with Coyu, what is it that you like about him?
I like a lot of things from him. He's passionate, intense, professional, intelligent... But what I like the most from him is the clear vision he has about the industry. He always discovers the lines, linking the dots. The paths that connect where he is with the place he wants to reach. And I can tell you, he is always right.

What’s the funniest experience you’ve had with him?
I think that his recent birthday bash party in Ibiza was super funny. He's not used to drinking and I was forcing him all the night, so he ended up a little bit drunk. I was seeing his face, exhausted after a long weekend, and I started laughing so bad at him. I have to say though, when we had breakfast that morning he had more energy than me!

You’re born and bred in Barcelona, what makes this city so special?
What can I say. It is the city of my life and I love everything about it! The weather, it's people, the food, the overall vibe.

What would you do to change the world?
If I only could have the same power and influence as now, what I would do is try to be a good example of human being for my beloved ones, as I try now. On the other side, if I had enough power and influence to do whatever, I would invest and empower the free and clean energy resources and probably look into the legalization and regularize the use of certain drugs. Obviously adding a lot of taxes over them for the greater good. Yeah, it may sound pretty extremist but I strongly think that if you erase fossil fuels and drugs from the equation, you don’t give any room for the bad guys to keep doing their shit that is killing both our race and our whole planet.

You tour around a lot, what’s your favourite story from on the road?
A few months ago I did a tour around the United States and decided to travel between cities by car to discover and experience the country from the deepest sides. When I was driving from the Sequoias National Park to San Francisco I stopped in an old and almost abandoned town that had just a really small cafe to eat something. There was an old man, having a cup of coffee. I sat next to him and he started to speak with me, asking me about my accent and what I was doing there. I had one of the most inspiring conversations ever. He explained to me a lot of old Indian stories and super interesting points of view about life and the way we live it. I was supposed to spend 10 minutes there, but I stayed for two hours. This has been undoubtedly my favourite memory of my tours.

Your work as Bastian Bux is the result of ‘reducing everything surrounding a DJ and producer to its essential element’ - do you live your life by this sort of rule?
Yes. I always say that most of our daily problems and worryings come from the fact that we don't reduce things to its basic aspects. It's somehow like when you want to eat one of those giant burgers. You have to slice it in tiny bits before!

What made you work in this way with music?
I think that my previous experience in the business. I had a quite big success seven years ago with my previous moniker project. I was young and inexperienced and had to quit for two years because I was completely unhappy with what I was doing. I think that this experience has been essential for me to work as I work now with music.

If you could fill a swimming pool with anything, what would that be and why?
With studio gear, all types and variety from the past and the present. Obvious reasons.

What makes you so passionate about electronic music?
I think that the fact that music is unpredictable and uncontrollable.

What are you most in love with right now?
With my niece Mara, my sister’s first daughter. She’s the cutest thing on Earth.

What would your superhero power be and what would you do it with?
It would be the superpower of Karma. I would send to every person in the world exactly the same as they sent to others so they could re-think about how they live and what they do.

What ideas changed your life?
A lot. It is impossible to write down them all. But maybe one of the most recent ideas that have influenced me is to think that both the past and the future doesn’t exist, and the only thing we actually have is the present, now.

What’s the worst trouble you’ve been in?
I think that it was back in the summer of 2009. My family was bankrupt and I had to go to work in a shitty bar in the south of Spain. Too many bad things happened that summer. We were so close to losing everything we had. One of the worst experiences of my life, but also one of the best life lessons I ever had.

If you weren’t involved in the music scene, what do you see yourself doing?
Cooking and writing. No doubts about it.
