Nicolas Duvoisin on the future - 'Many interesting projects are coming in 2018!'

House | Thursday 15th February 2018 | Joe

We caught up with Swiss DJ Nicolas Duvoisin to talk falling in love with techno, his record label Fantastic Friends, Bob Marley and future projects.

What's your earliest memory of falling in love with electronic music?

The excitement that I could sense before techno/clubbing nights especially in London when I began to DJ. I’d say I fell in love with this music without actually realizing, it just happened, you know?

You used to live in London many years ago, what were your fondest memories of the house and techno scene back then?

When I started off, I didn’t have much money, as I had just opened a record-store in Geneva (a subsidiary of Plastic Fantastic in London), so I only had a computer and didn’t even have any monitors. I have to say, nowadays I’m getting into analogue machines more and more, trying to avoid spending too much time in front of the computer and spending more time tweaking knobs. We already spend enough time in front of screens all the time...

How has the way you produce changed over the years?

When I started off, I didn’t have much money, as I had just opened a record-store in Geneva (a subsidiary of Plastic Fantastic in London), so I only had a computer and didn’t even have any monitors. I have to say nowadays, I’m getting into analogue machines more and more, trying to avoid spending too much time in front of the computer and spending more time tweaking knobs. We already spend enough time in front of screens as it is!

Your record label Fantastic Friends has a had some real quality releases and some killer parties. how did it all begin?

During 2009, the record industry was going through difficult times with the arrival of new technologies like Traktor or Serato, etc… so my business partner (Olivier Kolly) and I decided it was best to close the shop. However, I wanted to stay involved in the world of electronic music, so I asked some artists I’d invited to play at our nights to become my “fantastic friends” and help me get the label started. So guys like Agaric, Mark Henning, Billy Dalessandro, Someone Else, Yapacc and Matt Star, among others, decided to give the label a chance. I am so grateful to them and also to Olivier Coeugniet whom I owe a lot as well!

What forthcoming releases do you have in the near future?

Many interesting projects are coming in 2018. One of my tracks will be releasing on a VA on New York famous label Resolute. There’s also a remix I made for Liviu which I am really happy with, his vinyl release will be out in February on my label Fantastic Friends. I also have a release coming out on Cervidae alongside Joe Le Groove and Todd Bodine, as well as a joint-release with Gel Abril and a release with my friends on Golden Gate (Berlin) out in February. There are also many other tracks that are in the process of being signed, but I can’t spill the beans yet.

Name one piece of kit that is essential to your productions?

Delay Moogerfooger, love this pedal! Roland Jupiter 6.

Nike or Adidas?

Nike.

What else have you got in store for 2018?

If I can find the time, I would love to get an album together, exploring some of my earlier influences like funk, ragga or dub, but we’ll see about that...

Name three things you would change about the scene?

Computers, smoke machines…

If you were banished to a desert island, and you had to take three famous people with you, dead or alive. Who would you take, and why?

I’d enjoy spending time on an island with my girlfriend Monica who always supports me in all of my musical and personal projects. I’d probably also take Laurent Garner so he can tell me all of his stories and I can save the time of having to read his book… (I’m quite lazy when it comes to reading). And probably Bob Marley, just to relax and hang out with the legend.
