What was the best hip hop album of 2015? We think this incredible album may have been missed by a few of you!
Oddisee has remained a relitively underground artist on the hip hop scene, despite boasting an impressive discography of around 17 albums in the last 10 years. An emcee/producer with a profound message, intelligent lyricism and increadibly crisp and clear beats.
His latest album The Good Fight is his most 'commercial' but doesn't sound it at all. He manages to create beautiful music which draws from a range of different genres leaning most heavily on boom-bap and lounge/jazz.
The most impressive aspect of his music, in my opinion, is the genuine musicality of it. In an era where music, particularly hip hop, has become grotesquely homogenised and commercial, Oddisee is a breath of fresh air.
Songs such as Contradiction's Maze are easy to listen to and catchy but still retain meaningful lyrics. Another element that we commend Oddisee on is his use of irregular time signatures on songs like Counter Clockwise which offer a very different sonic experience to conventional hip hop. His music is simply that, it's music; in every sense of the word. He combines beautifully composed instrumentals with articulate lyricism to achieve something truly new and varied.
We would recommend The Good Fight to anybody who has grown tired of the conventions of modern music and wants to get back to the essence of hip hop that has a message but is a pleasure to listen to or to anybody who really loves good music, hip hop or otherwise.
