The "Cloud" Pavilion

Tuesday 18th June 2013 | Negar

The Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto has designed this year’s temporary structure for the 2013 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. For architects and design lovers, it’s one of the most anticipated events of the year, so go and see the all-new design, you are also able to interact with it!

It is a really fundamental question how architecture is different from nature, or how architecture could be part of nature, or how they could be merged…what are the boundaries between nature and artificial things.” Sou Fujimoto

This semi-transparent structure is a delicate three-dimensional structure occupying 350 square-meters of space in front of the Serpentine Gallery. Already, the pavilion has got the “cloud” nickname because of its gridded structure and its lightness, which is generated through the 20mm steel poles being stacked together. The structure is broken to allow access as well as to create different views around, above and below it. The semi-transparency of the structure appears as if a cloud-mist is rising from Kensington Garden’s surface. It’s this particular aspect which has made the viewer fall in-love with the delicate quality of the pavilion.

It’s a scenic mystery how 28 kilometres of thin metal can be piled on top of eachother without it crumbling down! Truly, it is an innovative design, a perfect place to chill this summer.
