State of Independence Market, Hackney’s newest market curated by Let’s Be Brief, combines festival vibes with outdoor shopping courtesy of some of the most exciting emerging creative and food brands at Hackney Downs Studios.
Taking place on the last weekend of each month until September, State of Independence is a cocktail of, well, cocktails, DJ’s, fashion, art and a smorgasbord of tasty street food and workshops. So far the market has featured Dimensions Soundsystem & CDR going back to back old school soundsystem stylee, life coaching sessions with Faculty of School of Life Member Fiona Buckland, and SOI Rum Bar serving special Rum Punch.
July’s edition of SOI, held on 25th and 26th of the month, includes another stellar line-up of DJs (TBA) and Hackney storytelling workshop with Celebrate My Library and illustrator Marylou Faure, where participating children will work collaboratively to create a book. Bringing some additional colour to the overall proceedings will be Colour Your City and their collective of artists. Colour Your City will be transforming the space for July and throughout the market season, with live art, colour installation and art workshops.
Some of July's vendors include Le Bao and their shiny silver truck, who create Bao Buns stuffed with a fusion of global flavours from Morocco, Taiwan, and Greece to France, Brasa who bring an array of Mexican flavours, and LICKALIX who will be keeping everyone cool and calm, with their yummy, organic fruit ice lollies.
There will also be art from Other Gallery Collective, homewares from LEISUREWORKS and Copper Candles, vintage fashion from No Licence, Oh Jeff, and a crop of new designers. Plus more traders to be announced.
