Plan Mercury

Other | Thursday 13th September 2012 | Osh

The buzz has begun for this year’s Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize nominees and as to be expected there are already a few favourites. Running in the lead are Plan B and Richard Hawley with William Hill giving both 4/1 odds of winning.

Earlier this year Plan B had his directorial debut with his film Ill Manors, the soundtrack of the same name went straight to number one in the week of its release. The rapper/actor revealed: “I’ve always been an artist that cared more about the album than the single. You’ve got to be able to make a good record that people can listen to from start to finish.”

This is the second time that Richard Hawley has been recognised for his music by the BMMP, back in 2006 he was nominated for his album Coles Corner, but it was the Arctic Monkeys that took the prize. Although upon receiving their award, Arctic’s Alex Turner saluted Hawley by announcing: “someone call 999, Richard Hawley has been robbed”. At 45 Richard is the oldest nominee, could this be his year? Other nominees include BBC Sound of 2012 winner Michael Kiwanuka, Jessie Ware and The Maccabees, so the two definitely have some stiff competition.

Here’s the full list of nominees:

  • Alt-J – An Awesome Wave
  • Ben Howard – Every Kingdom
  • Djando Djando – Django Django
  • Field Music – Plumb
  • Jessie Ware – Devotion
  • Lianna La Havas – Is Your Love Big Enough
  • Michael Kiwanuka – Home Again
  • Plan B – Ill Manors
  • Richard Hawley – Standing At The Sky’s Edge
  • Roller Trio – Roller Trio
  • Sam Lee – Ground of It’s Own
  • The Maccabees – Given To The Wild

The winner of this £20,000 prize will be revealed on November 1. Till then let’s kick back and enjoy some of this music this lot have provided us of over the last year, here’s Plan B’s Ill Manors.
