The xx have just dropped the first single from their sophomore album, Coexist. The track, Angels, has also been played by the group at a series of intimate shows around the UK over the past couple of months and now excitment is building around the first single release by the band since 2010.
The group, consisting of Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim and Jamie Smith (also known as Jamie xx), received critical acclaim for their first album xx and went on to scoop the prestigious Mercury Prize for Best Album of the Year in 2010.
Angels explores the signature airy xx sound that made them so popular and conjures a chilling beauty within its sound. It's tender and minimalistic yet still makes a big impact. Jamie xx has also reported that the album would be inspired by club scene music but, seeing as there is no sign of this on Angels, it remains to be seen whether dancefloor sounds will make an appearance on the rest of the album.
Coexist is set to be released on 10 September and is available to pre-order now on iTunes.
