50th anniversary of the Rolling Stones’ first gig

Indie | Tuesday 10th July 2012 | Osh

On a summer night, the 12th of July 1962 at the infamous Marquee, the first chords of a legend were played in front of no many more than a hundred people. The Marquee, probably the best venue in music history, was set to host the first gig of the Rolling Stones, or as they were billed at that remarkable night “Mick Jagger and the Rollin' Stones”.

The venue, located at 165 Oxford Street, saw the very beginning of a legend. But the Rolling Stones were not who they are now or the same band who played there. The frontline was formed by a couple of teenagers, Jagger and Keith Richards, Brian Jones who had set up the name of the band due to the eponymous Muddy Water’s song, an American blues singer. Dick Taylor was on bass and the future The Kinks drummer Mick Avory completed the first Rolling Stones crew.

The gig lasted close to 50 minutes and it was full of American rhythm and Blues beats. Based on the number of goatees in the photographs, many were also diehard jazz fans; those who were there report that the audience took some time to warm up.

Rolling Stones' Exhibition

Calling all Rolling Stones fans, London’s Sommerset House is set to show a free photography exhibition this summer. It will be called The Rolling Stones: 50 and it will be held from the 13th of July to the 27th of August in the landmark venue's East Wing Galleries and it will coincide with the release of a book of the same time. This book will show more than 700 pictures from rare and never seen moments of the band including some negative strips.
