Album Of The Month - Snoop Lion - Reincarnation
Thursday 4th July 2013 | Tobi
The album might be the ninth studio album by the artist formerly known as Snoop Dogg but it represents the first of the 'reincarnated' Snoop Lion. The album also marks his departure from hip hop and his entrance into reggae.
When Snoop Lion, as he prefers to be called now, announced that he was converting to Rastafarianism and then travelled to Jamaica to study the Niyabinghi branch of the Rastafari movement, it seemed like it might be a passing fad. But this new album feels for real.
The lead single for the album, ‘Ashtrays and Heartbreaks’ was surprising in its featuring Miley Cyrus, who has been trying her best to break the mould of the innocent teen popstar that she has been cast in. And the song strikes the right notes with its authentic reggae baseline and Snoop’s effortless delivery.
The album also featured some other more mainstream artistes like Drake, Chris Brown, Busta Rhymes and Akon and some production work done by Major Lazer, Mr Vegas and Supa Dups.
While the album might not sound like a hardcore reggae LP, it offers up a soothing and thoroughly enjoyable blend of reggae roots and electro-pop sounds.
