After undergoing significant changes to their line-up, sound, and aesthetic in late 2011, The Chapman Family released the EP Cruel Britannia in summer 2012. A 20 minute onslaught of Northern post-punk angst rock, Cruel Britannia was the shake a snoozy society so desperately needed as its message rang firm and true with all those that heard it.
A year on, The Chapman Family return with their new single ‘This One’s For Love’, and singer, Kingsley Chapman, doesn’t seem quite so angry. He is no longer singing about the apparent poor state of our land, nor is he verbally belittling the monarchy; instead, he is singing about love.
While still aggressive by most band’s standards, this single is The Chapman Family showing their more affectionate side. The distorted guitars are still ever present, the fuzz bass continues to drone, the heavily accented shouts continue to haunt the listeners, yet, there is something calmer and more mature about Kingsley’s delivery. It’s surprisingly pleasant.
Vocal harmonies, gang vocal chants, puppy-dog eyed refrains of “You and I forever, in time” - all these qualities are so un-The Chapman Family of the past. There’s even a key change chorus at the end. Yet somehow, it all works beautifully.
This isn’t an angry, anti-monarchist call to arms, this is a love song. Kingsley isn’t lying, this one really is for love.
‘This One’s For Love’ - released physically this week on Limited Edition Purple 7” vinyl. Available from most independent music stores.
