Hip-Hop: D-Dark Interview

RnB/Hip Hop | Thursday 14th January 2016 | Tom

After he dropped a banger with 'Mission Riddim X (Bang)' featuring Scrufizzer, Lady Lykez, Roachee, Xploder, Maxsta and Zeph Ellis, we had to catch up with D-Dark to see what he has planned for the year ahead.

D-Dark, what can we expect from you this year?
Bangers, tunes, a couple singles, a lot. I’ve been working in the studio, getting all my stuff ready, so watch out, it’s coming! I don’t want to say too much, know what I mean?!!

What part of your creative talent do you enjoy using the most? Do you prefer rapping or producing?
Both, they come hand in hand, being able to use all my skills combined has given me more knowledge, a kind of freedom letting me decide how I want my music to sound and how I want to deliver my music. I couldn’t choose one because they go hand in hand.

You’ve done a few covers, so I was thinking about a D-Dark 'Hotline Bling' cover. What do you think?
Haha, I don’t know! Before I was doing covers but now I’m really focusing on my own stuff, making original music.

So what sorts of projects are you working on then?
There's a mixtape in the pipeline and also a couple singles to watch out for.

Grime had a big 2015, can you see this continuing? What has contributed to this rise?
Definitely! I think everything, Skepta collaborating with Drake, the clash coming back into action, for example Chip and Bugzy. You’re seeing more collaborations like the 'Mission Riddim X' collab we did, there’s more unity and the Internet is really helping.

Do you think there are any artists out there that don’t get enough attention, are there any you think are underrated?
Yeah all the time, that happens, with artists a big thing is time. An artist needs their time to come through and do their thing, as long as they stay consistent they will come through and shine.

Moving away from music you’ve made a few videos. Do you have any big plans for new videos?
Yeah! I was in Switzerland not too long ago and shot something out there, I was also in Rotterdam and shot something out there too. I’m taking it around the world, so you’ve got some cool videos coming.

Are there any films or videos that you’ve seen recently that you can recommend?
What was the name of that movie…. oh yeah! It was Quentin Tarantino, The Hateful Eight! It’s mad, don’t expect action straight away, but then it’s mad. You need patience.

I’m going to watch that later!
Watch that bro.

Did you make any New Year's resolutions?
Not really, but I want to live healthy and generally have a good year.

Any positive advice for aspiring musicians?
Believe in the music you’re making, believe in yourself, don’t watch the haters, do you and you’ll get where you want to get to.

Finally, anyone you want to shout out?
Anybody?! Ha

Yeah!
Big up all the supporters, big up all the fans!

Cheers mate!
Thank you!
