Surfer Blood @ Rough Trade East, London, Tuesday 18th
Rough Trade East have a long history of hosting brilliant bands for their in-store shows and Tuesday night is no different as Surfer Blood play a headline show. Their sophomore LP Pythons is released this month so head down to Brick Lane and pick up a copy and get a wristband for their show on Tuesday night.
Jagwar Ma @ XOYO, London, Wednesday 19th
Australian psychedelic duo Jagwar Ma are spinning heads everywhere they go off the back of the release of their debut record Howlin. It is a suitably summery affair with breezy, Madchester-inspired beats and effervescent vibes. The Sydney band play a headline show at XOYO on Wednesday after playing an intimate in-store show at Rough Trade last week.
These New Puritans @ Heaven, London, Wednesday 19th
Field of Reeds, the third effort from These New Puritans, was only released last week but is already attracting gushing reviews and being talked about as a successful follow-up to their art-rock masterpiece Hidden (which was crowned NME's Album of the Year in 2010). They play a completely one-off date this Wednesday at London's Heaven where they will be showcasing their breathtaking latest album.
Charli XCX @ Islington Academy, London, Wednesday 19th
At only 20 years old, Charli XCX seems like she has been around forever. She recorded her debut album at just 16 and became a star of music blogs nationwide. The sophisticated electro of her 2013 album True Romance suggests Charli will soon make the leap from blog superstar to pop royalty. She already has an international hit under her belt, of course, by teaming up with Icona Pop to record the brilliant 'I Love It' last year. Her headline set at Islington Academy on Wednesday will be the latest show in a hectic 2013 for Charli.
The Strypes @ Islington Academy, London, Friday 21st
Irish's great hopes for 2013 are The Strypes and, whilst they may only be sixteen year-olds, they certainly do everything to impress. After an accomplished appearance on Later...with Jools Holland a few weeks back, the young beat-pop band will play Islington Academy ahead of their Glastonbury Festival debut next weekend. A gig that is not to be missed.
Peter Hook & The Light @ Coronet, London, Friday 21st
The legendary bassist brings his anthemic back-catalogue to London's Coronet (on Kent Road) this Friday. Boasting a hit-packed career of thirty years, Hook is one of the most decorated and successful British musicians of all time. Having founded Joy Division and New Order, Hook will unleash a whole host of hits from seminal albums such as Unknown Pleasures, Closer and Power, Corruption + Lies.
