L'Étranger unveils French house inspired 'Single'

House | Tuesday 21st July 2015 | Lilly

L'Étranger, translates to 'The Outsider' and relates to Ben Thomas’ musical approaches as an Englishman producing French inspired house music. The release ‘Single’ contains two new compositions. Work on the title track began last year, and the latter ‘Pulse’, a couple of years previous.

'Single' features Thomas’ own vocals, harking back to past tunes such as ‘Mersey Mersey Me’. The Beach Boys and early 80’s R&B groups such as Tavares have acted as influences for L’Etranger and contributed to the music he makes today, all of which nods towards the likes of Cashmere Cat, DJ Paypal and Lido.

Speaking about the production process Thomas recounted “My approach has been different when writing these tracks. I didn’t purposefully envision them being played in a club, but more for listening elevated up on a cloud somewhere”. He continued “I’ve matured a lot since my debut and I think that’s evident in my songwriting. When songwriting I find myself gravitating towards very human topics. I want everyone to be able to relate to my songs, and being single is one of those things everyone can.”

‘Single’ is a piece of daytime party perfection. Dreamy, soulful vocals glide over lush, sun kissed melodies and create a track that verges on Balearic. Immediately demonstrating Thomas’ unfaltering ear for melody, ‘Single’ draws from house, disco, electro, even R&B and the result is something magical.
