The music industry in 2013 has been swamped with great music, but there is one man who has once again brought a collection of lyrically and beautifully compelling music to the fore.
At 78 years old, Leonard Cohen continues to present the world with works of art as a renowned singer-songwriter, musician, poet, and novelist. Canadian-born Cohen has been contributing to the music world since the 1960s with a dozen stunning albums which have not once failed to assert a strong emotive reaction. Whether it is the poignant music, his haunting voice, or the intimately enticing lyrics, Cohen continues to produce exceptional work. This musical beauty becomes a version of written and visual beauty through his poetry and novels. Cohen wrote in his 2006 Book of Longing:
‘I can hold in a great deal; I don’t speak
Until the waters overflow their banks
And break through the dam.’
And thank goodness that those waters do overflow and the dam does break, because that is when Leonard Cohen brings to the world his masterful commentary on life. Cohen’s music revisits the themes of love, sexuality, religion, depression, and politics which he employs with powerful emotion where by his audience becomes persuasively engaged. Cohen has been recognised amongst the best, and great artists have paid tribute to his work. For instance with the film Leonard Cohen: I am your man and also Famous Blue Raincoat which is Jennifer Warnes’ fifth album a tribute to Cohen and his music.
January this year the music industry celebrated when it was gifted with the release of Leonard Cohen’s latest debut album Old Times, which has enjoyed the heights of music charts world-wide. Following this Leonard Cohen won the titles ‘Songwriter of the Year’ and ‘Artist of the Year’ at the 2013 Canadian JUNO awards. Cohen has begun his European tour, and all of those lucky enough to get tickets will be the envy of the rest of us, because Leonard Cohen is the man who will never cease to amaze the world.
