Track Review! Sandy Rivera – ‘Fall For You’
Thursday 6th June 2013 | Alex
Someone asked me to review this, and that’s always awkward. I dread sending that ‘thanks, but I’ve told everyone it’s terrible’ e-mail, so it’s wicked that I don’t have to.
Just think of ‘Fall For You’ as Sandy Rivera’s track; it’s not, it’s ‘Kings Of Tomorrow’, but let’s not get knotted up. It’s that one Annie Mac snatched from the infamous ‘Defected Records’ catalogue and slipped into a mini-mix on Monday.
They reckon they cross over genres, but I don’t. It’s not narrow or anything like that, but now we’re in this bizarre genre-less (or genre-full, depending on how you look at it) nether-zone it’s nice to see one thing done wholeheartedly. It doesn’t quite know what it is but that’s the point – it tremors across whole-hearted tumbling – “WoulditbewrongifI” and sassy assurance. That rumbling double-bass thing is fucking incredible, but I wonder if it’s just a burst of immediate gratification? I think it probably isn’t – the searing chords throw it all up in the air and so it’s not an easily understood track.
The vocals aren’t all that – if you take out the distractingly romantic setting, or just the video altogether, they come crashing back down as anonymous dance croaking. (Someone says “don’t take out the video, then” – I hate that person.) I don’t know how all these average singers have managed to get away with it. Other than that, ‘Fall for You’ dreamily shakes and wobbles its way toward sophistication. You’ll still think of Sandy Rivera as a house-God, but I bet it was awkward to film.
