One Unique Sound

'Forest-rock' emerges into the realm of the indie music industry.

With the release of their self-titled album, Jinja Safari has once again aroused the attention of the indie music industry. All the way from Sydney, this five piece band has successfully created an energetic and dynamic album. After the release of their previous album, Locked By Land, the band were likened to Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Sufjan Stevens, and The Animal Collective, however, this debut album shows that Jinja Safari have really come into their own, creating a unique sound of Afro-pop rock. Only being signed in 2010, the band has grown and formed their self-proclaimed genre of ‘forest-rock’ which they have certainly given a good name. These unique vibes have taken indie music to a whole new level, bringing a new definition to what an album rich in energy and colour should possess.

Jinja Safari does not disappoint, with winner songs such as ‘Toothless Grin’ and ‘Oh Benzo!’ The band name derives from the town Jinja, Uganda, of which the grandmother of Marcus Azon, the lead singer, grandma was born. Jinja Safari spent much of the previous year travelling for getting inspiration for their new debut album. This strong connection with African culture and music is perfectly captured throughout the entire album. It is wild, free, and beautifully joyous.
